Las two weeks of february

We are starting to work with decimal numbers. So far, the smallest number the students know was 1. There are more places to the right of the point in the place value chart. These numbers are in the tenths and hundredths places. Decimals are used in every day life, like money and timing sports events.
Each Unit has been divided into a hundred smaller squares, or hundredths (centesimas) in Spanish. The students made a skyline with buildings and landmarks made of grid paper. Then they had to write the number of squares, which are hundredths of a unit. The also had to write is as a fraction.

Weeks of January 29 to February 9

After a couple of weeks preparing for the Big Night, students and parents enjoyed a successful Storytelling Night. Mixed-age groups prepared and rehearsed for two weeks in which they had to tell a story without reading it, supported first by a storyboard but soon they did not need to use it. They had to show good use of body language, eye contact, adequate voice, imagination and composure, as the had to struggle with the obvious nervousness of public speaking. This was a great and inspiring exercise that initiated our young students in public speaking, a skill that doesn't come naturally to all but which all of us have to put in practice at some point in our lives.

We have been working with fractions in math. The students are learning what equivalent fractions are, as well as to add fractions with same denominators. The most advanced students are also simplifying fractions and understanding improper fractions. Fractions are a visual part of math in which more students are feeling successful as they can tinker with fraction manipulatives which are color coded.

In Science the first pill bug eggs are starting to show. In a humid environment simulated in the classroom, these Isopods can thrive under the curious sight of our students.

In Spanish, we are analyzing the vocabulary for the coming Math Task, in which the students will apply their understanding of a variety of skills to solve a problem, using Spanish to explain their thinking.
